I am writing this post in great sadness. The events of Jan. 6 were entirely predictable. Failure by the Capital Hill police to protect our government while carrying out their duties in compliance with the Constitution of the United States is unforgivable. It is only by luck and the incompetence of the mob that members of congress were not held hostage or worse. A president of the United States who incited this cannot be excused.
I am a liberal. Been one my whole life. That does not make me your enemy. I revere the Constitution. I support our military. I have one child who has been in the Navy for 29 years. My wife’s family has WWII heroes who saw combat in the Philippines and on the bridge of the Yorktown at Coral Sea and Midway. One of her brothers spent 23 years in the Navy, while her eldest brother spent 3 tours of duty in Vietnam. My great grandfather was a captain in the Civil War. I am proud of all of them. They went beyond what was required to defend my country and the Constitution.
What I saw on Jan. 6 was not patriotism. Patriots don’t vandalize the capital, put their feet up on the speaker of the house’s desk, urinated on the carpet, and killed a cop by hitting him in the head with a fire extinguisher. I cannot bring myself to call it a coup. Coup is a word that gives it too much credit. It was led by idiots in red hats and a guy that looked like Chewbacca in a bikini. There were no real soldiers in this “coup”, they were hairy fat guys in fake tactical gear pretending to be bad asses. They didn’t have tanks; they drove up in clown cars. It was thuggery in defense of lies and lunacy propagated by the worse president in American history.
And the shit is getting deeper. ANTIFA was the cause of this? What the hell. I wish I can tell you that no one in my family believes this. More significant than a foolish 80-year-old member of my family is Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz who stood on the floor of the house saying that ANTIFA disguised as Trumpers were identified in the group that attached the capital building. Two senators and over 100 members of the house tried to nullify the election of Biden/Harris. What ever happened to reverence of the Constitution? Did it ever exist at all? Have I been wrong all these years?
I am sad, angry, and ashamed. My country has been vandalized, the Constitution has been defiled, and we Americans are being held up to ridicule by the rest of the world. For all of those still wearing MAGA hats, it is time to take them off and put them in the trash. But first you should wipe your ass with them.
